How to Transition Your Dog to New Food

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

Avoid stomach upset and digestive issues by transitioning your dog from one food to another the right way!

The best way to transition your dog from one food to another is to do so gradually over a period of 7-10 days. Whether you're switching from one brand to another, or switching food types (ex. kibble to raw), it's important to take it slow and give your dog's system time to adjust.

Transition Timeline

Sensitivity level will vary by each individual dog and the timeline below can be shortened or lengthened based on your dog's needs. If your dog experiences any diarrhea or vomiting, you may need to transition to the new food more slowly.

Days 1-3: Feed 75% of the current food with 25% of the new food

Days 4-6: Feed 50% of the current food with 50% of the new food

Days 7-9: Feed 25% of the current food with 75% of the new food

Day 10: Feed 100% new food!

  • Consider adding a probiotic or other safe digestive supplement during the transition to support healthy gut flora (bacteria).

  • Pumpkin is a great fiber source to add and can help with digestion and stool quality.

  • Ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water, especially at mealtime.

Be sure to contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your dog's health while transitioning foods.
